Winterize Your Kids

Winter is an exciting time for outdoor activities, including snowboarding and sledding. It's an especially joyous time for children. To keep your memories of this winter season happy, remember to protect your children from the elements.

  • Don't allow your kids to play outside alone. Any child younger than 8 should be well-supervised.
  • Young children need to take frequent breaks to come inside for a warm drink.
  • Keep children indoors when it is bitterly cold outside or the wind chill is well
    below 0.
  • Remind your children not to put their tongues on cold metal such as a flagpole or swing set pole.
  • Dress your children in several layers of clothing. If they get too warm, have them remove a layer at a time.
  • Children should wear hats that cover their ears and wear mittens rather than gloves for extra warmth.
  • Remove all drawstrings from your children's clothing to prevent strangulation. Use a neck warmer instead of a scarf.
  • Footwear should include warm, waterproof boots that are roomy enough to
    wiggle toes.
