| Child-proofing
for Summertime
Be safe and enjoy your summer fun even more!
Now that it is getting warmer, families will be heading outside for fun in the sun. Your young child will want to explore the great outdoors, but it is good to keep in mind that not everything children come in contact with is safe for them. You will want to keep an eye out whether your child is just in the backyard or on a wonderful camping trip. This month, we want to share a few helpful hints to keep your child safe during the summer months.
- Is your little one learning to crawl, walk or run?
Investing in a safety gate to use on porches and decks, in campers, or at relatives' homes may be a good idea this summer. Stay away from mesh-panels that give children a way to climb over the side. There are some great inexpensive but durable safety gates available that can keep your crawler, walker or wobbly runner safe and sound.
- Is your tot a little too friendly?
Some children don't understand the difference between family members and everyone else. They will run to and hug any and every person they encounter. This can become a bit of a problem for parents in crowded amusement parks, malls or even just the corner grocery. Of course we want our children to feel comfortable around other people, but we also want to make sure they are safe. Keeping a hand on your child at all times in strange or crowded places will save you from having to face a frantic search. And, regardless of the setting, teaching your youngster what is good and bad touch is a must! Take the time to help him or her understand that the family doesn't have secrets. Also, practice what you want them to do in public places to be safe.
- Are you relieved the cold season is over?
Most people believe that cold weather has something to do with catching a cold. The truth is germs cause illnesses, not weather. During the summer months at day camp, on the jungle gym, the play area at a fast-food restaurant or anywhere children come in contact with other kids, colds can spread. A simple way to decrease the spread of germs and still allow your child to enjoy friends this summer is to routinely wash hands. There are some great antibacterial disposable towels or dry hand wash products that can help you feel at ease even in the worst public restroom.
- Hotel or resort child-care: how qualified are they?
It's important to know who is taking care of your children if you are staying at a hotel or resort that offers this wonderful child-care amenity. Check out your babysitters' know-how. What qualifies them to care for your child? Are they qualified to administer first aid or life-saving treatment to a child? Has the hotel done background checks (references, criminal check, etc.) on these people? Have you observed them with your children during a short visit or talked to other families at the hotel using their services?
