We live in an age of ultra-information. Kids are showered in a media downpour of videos, songs, television, computer programs, movies and magazines. Images, sounds, ideas and sensations come rushing in at the click of a mouse or the tap of a keypad. With all these messages, kids can't avoid being affected.

This abundance of media can offer a wonderful new world of excitement and discovery for children. But it can also open up an undesirable world of negative, harmful messages your child may not be ready to handle. As a parent, you must protect your child by helping him or her separate the good from the bad.

Here are some helpful hints:

  • Be a good role model and exhibit good behavior.
  • Set a limit on the amount of time your kids can watch television.
  • Remember that computers can drain the brain, too. Limit computer use as well.
  • Offer your kids other recreational choices.
  • Make TV viewing contingent on reading or doing homework.
  • Monitor and evaluate what your kids are watching, listening to, or logging on to. Make sure your kids are staying safe online.
  • Encourage your children to choose quality programs.
  • Watch TV and movies with your kids.
  • Teach your kids how to evaluate media messages.
