As parents, we all understand that our children grow up and leave home and it is our responsibility to help get them prepared for what lies ahead as they venture out into the world. We must acknowledge that leaving home is a BIG change for children and parents alike, so it's important to discuss the expectations for the future and how to handle the art of “adulting."

“While communicating with your child is vital, how you approach the conversation is equally as important as the content of what you discuss," said Michelle Tauber, Senior Director of Operations for Boys Town's Successful Futures program. “Above all, you don't want to lecture. You want your child to fully participate in the discussion and embrace this new chapter feeling independent and confident.

These important conversations should be ongoing as leaving home is a big adjustment that requires planning and preparation. Conversations should be collaborative discussions about setting goals and expectations and general life skill guidance. Topics to cover include:

Money

  • Be clear about who is paying for what – you or your child?
  • What is your child's budget?
  • If your child is going to college or trade school, do you expect them to work to cover some of the expenses?
  • How will bills be handled?
  • When is it OK to ask for money?

Safety

  • Discuss the importance of staying safe by locking the car and dorm room/apartment
  • Remind your child to always be aware of their surroundings and what is happening
  • Review emergency procedures
  • Stress that if something or somewhere doesn't feel safe …leave

Health

  • Empower your child to be mindful of their mental and physical health and wellness
  • Encourage your child to get enough sleep and try to eat right by not skipping meals or living on junk food

Relationships

  • Discuss the importance of healthy relationships with roommates, friends and romantic interests
  • Encourage your child to take the initiative to meet new people and show interest in others

Accountability

  • Set clear, agreed upon expectations for both you and your child
  • Discuss things like grades and access to health information

“Open and ongoing conversations between parents and children are vital to a smooth transition to adulthood," said Tauber, “so don't avoid them, just approach them with respect and care."
