School’s Out, Rules Out? Not with Our Summer Contract!

It’s that time of year again that kids dream of and parents sometimes dread —summer break. And that means that houses all across America will be filled with kids who think that just because they’re no longer in school, they’re able to act however they want, free from any rules and constraints.

Sleep ‘till noon? Sure! Play video games for 12 hours straight? Sounds good! Stay out until 2:00 a.m. with your friends? Awesome! Ignore your chores? Of course!

So how does one go about reining in a wild child who’s just been freed from the shackles of nine months of mandatory education? Well, as with most things involving kids, you need to establish rules up front, so that they know what’s expected of them.

To that end, the parenting experts at Boys Town have developed a handy little tool called the Breeze Through Summer Agreement. It’s a contract that’ll establish a set of summer conduct rules for your kids. You simply select the boxes that apply to your situation and click on the “build agreement & print” button, and voilà! You have a “contract” that you and your kids can print, sign and put up on the fridge or corkboard. You can even customize the agreement with rules of your own. That way everyone knows what’s expected of them this summer, and the household will run that much smoother.

Let’s just say that most of us — especially children — do better when we know what’s expected of us. So enjoy the summer, and don’t worry; you’ll be making those back-to-school shopping lists before you know it!
