BUILDING YOUR CIRCLES OF SUPPORT

We all need people we can lean on, especially in times of stress or uncertainty. Building a strong circle of support ensures that no one in your family has to face challenges alone. Having a network of trusted people—both inside and outside your family—can provide emotional, practical and even spiritual support when needed most.

Why Support Circles Matter

It's easy to feel isolated when you're dealing with stress, but reaching out for help can lighten the load. For children, having more than one trusted adult to go to can give them multiple outlets to share their feelings and experiences.

Teaching Activity

Creating Support Circles for Each Family Member

This week at dinner, have a conversation with your family about the people they can turn to when they need support. Talk through a few real-life situations and explore who from the list below might be a good person to go to for help. You can even practice what they might say when reaching out. Some examples include:

  • Family members
  • Close friends
  • Teachers or coaches
  • Community leaders
  • Crisis hotlines or help centers

Social Skills

Identify Your Support Network

This week, take some time to sit down with your family and help each person identify their circle of support. Write down at least three people each person can turn to when they need help. Bonus Tip: Encourage your family members to take it one step further and create a safety plan.

Do you need help right now? If you’re a parent facing challenges or have a child in need of support, contact the Boys Town National Hotline. It's available 24/7 and staffed by specially trained crisis counselors.
