So we have those opportunities to make bad decisions with peers all the time. Parents get this kind of urge, and I understand it totally, this urge to keep your kids from ever doing something stupid. They don't want them to touch the hot frying pan, you know. So they don't allow them to go out with their friends, or they don't allow them to use their cellphone, because they've done something stupid with that in the past.
Basically, what we need to do is give them that opportunity. Monitor them. If they make a dumb decision, have a consequence for it, but don't take it away altogether. So, we give it back to them pretty soon, because they need to experience that life event of being able to do something dumb and learning to control your impulses.
