Parenting Children with ADHD Ages 6-16

This class is currently offered for Nebraska residents only.

(Available in English | Meets once a week for seven-weeks | Only virtual class)

Parenting a child with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) can challenge even the most skilled parent.

Join our other parents of “medically diagnosed” children and learn what ADHD disorder is and how it might affect not only your child but your entire family. You will learn how the use of behavior management as part of your child’s treatment can improve relationships while giving your child the training they need. With the help of a trained instructor, you will learn how to apply strategies that will have a significant impact on your child’s high frequency behavior.

This class meets once a week for two hours for seven weeks. The class covers the following:

  • Understanding ADHD — Parents discuss facts, symptoms and the present treatment for children with ADHD. Parents will learn the importance of understanding their child’s development, and how to use it to set reasonable expectations that nurture their parent/child relationship.
  • ADHD Parents are Primary Teachers — Shows parents how to talk so their ADHD children will listen using social skills and kid-oriented reasons to increase by-in.
  • Praise is Powerful — Helps parents learn how to focus on encouragement using a 4/1 Ratio while praising their children to make improvements, attempts or use their own unique ability to reach expectations.
  • Preventing ADHD Problems — Enables parents to recognize neutral “teaching moments” to address “rumbling” behaviors while practicing ways to transition successfully to maintain rules and routines.
  • Correcting Problems — Helps parents focus on developing consistent feedback that teach children with ADHD how to undo or redo problem behavior. Parents learn how to correct their children with consistency, calmness and care.
  • Strategies to Calm Down — Teaches parents how to stay calm when their child with ADHD refuses to calm down. Parents will develop a safe-home strategy to teach alternatives to their child once they are calm to refuse outburst in the future.
  • Putting It All Together — Parents learn how to help children solve school and peer problems using the SODAS Method. Parents will develop their ability to communicate well with school staff using their School Success Plan.
